mordecai richler

The documentary profile on the Canadian writer Mordecai Richler, The Last of the Wild Jews, by Montreal filmmaker and journalist Francine Pelletier, presented tonight on Bravo TV channel, gives interesting insights on Richler the man and the author. The movie places him in the context of a particular North American Jewish identity, one that emerged from the immigrant ghettos of Montreal, New York and Chicago in the 1930s and 40s and burst on the literary main stage in the 1950s and 60, leaving a unique mark all through the 20th century and up until now. Mordecai Richler, Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer and Philip Roth belong to that generation.

Nice to see Mordecai's Montreal in the 40s, 50s and 70s, and measure the flight of time: mentalities, vibrant cultural gatherings, music, people and places.
